Using Data Transparency to Increase Community Trust
Using Data Transparency to Increase Community Trust is a resource to provide police leaders and professionals with information and strategies that police departments can use to increase data transparency efforts, initiatives, and practices with the goal of increasing trust with the communities they serve. Proactively sharing police-related data increases transparency, accountability, and engagement— which can empower the community with information, strengthen police relationships, and ultimately enhance public safety.

The IACP, in partnership with the Educational Development Center (EDC), developed this resource based on experience providing dedicated training and technical assistance to five police departments around the United States as a part of the IACP’s Community Trust Initiative—a project funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). In addition to providing tangible practices in how police agencies can start collecting and sharing data, this resource highlights the innovative strategies implemented by two of these police departments that work to build trust with the communities they serve through data transparency.
