Membership Criteria
Membership in the IACP is open to all law enforcement and those affiliated with the law enforcement profession, including police leaders, officers ranging from recruit to command-level, law enforcement executives, nonsworn law enforcement personnel, criminal justice academics and students, and more.

Active Membership
Active membership in the IACP is open to chiefs and superintendents of police as well as command-level police officers in public law enforcement agencies. Active members have the right to vote to determine official IACP policy and to elect association officers at the IACP Annual Conference and Exposition. Associate Membership
Associate membership is available to non-command level officers and civilians in law enforcement agencies and those involved in practicing or teaching law enforcement and/or security and other areas working with the law enforcement profession. Associate members enjoy the same benefits as active members, except they do not have the right to vote on the election of association officers or the right to run for office. Associate Leaders of Tomorrow – Sworn Officers
Available to sworn non-command level personnel not otherwise eligible for active membership.
Associate Leaders of Tomorrow – Students
Available to students enrolled at an accredited college or university in a Criminal Justice or related discipline not currently employed in a full time position. (Student Members receive online Police Chief magazine subscription).
Associate Academic
Available to Instructors/Researchers in criminal justice or related fields working at colleges & universities.
Associate Service Provider
Available to employees of companies or organizations providing services to, or assisting, the law enforcement profession.
General Associate Membership
Available to those working in or with law enforcement not outlined in another Associate Membership category, including: civilians working in law enforcement, private & corporate security, private detectives, associations and nonprofits, and medical/psychological professionals.
New Global Tiered Dues Structure
Seeking to improve equity for all members, the IACP is announcing a revised tiered dues structure based upon the World Bank’s country economic groupings. The IACP is offering international membership rates to allow those from lower-income economies to have more affordable access to the benefits and resources provided by the IACP.
What does this mean for you? All IACP members will continue to receive invaluable benefits and resources however, international members from lower-income economies will now have more affordable access. Members from Tier I countries will continue to receive Police Chief magazine mailed to them. Members from Tiers II, III and IV will receive access to the translated digital version at a reduced fee. The new membership dues fee structure will take effect starting January 1, 2023; however, international members joining or renewing beginning in October of 2022 will benefit from the new tiered dues structure.
