Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) - LATAM Regional Meeting
IACP participated in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) Regional Partners Meeting for Latin America, in Mexico City, Mexico on June 7-8, 2023. The meeting included lectures and panel discussions by government officials and initiative partners from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico on road safety challenges and opportunities in their respective countries. During the meeting, IACP co-facilitated a breakout discussion on enhanced traffic enforcement practices and observed a roadside motorcycle inspection checkpoint.
Liverpool John Moores University Student Visit
A group of students from Liverpool John Moores University in the UK visited IACP headquarters on June 7, 2023. While at IACP headquarters, the group learned about IACP’s global reach and the IACP’s Center for Police Research and Policy through presentations conducted by members of IACP’s Global Policing and Policy & Governance teams.
Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) - LATAM Regional Workshop
IACP hosted a regional workshop in Mexico City, Mexico focused on data-driven motorcycle speed enforcement under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) on June 5-6, 2023. Twelve agencies from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico participated in the workshop. Lectures and case studies were presented by officials from the District Secretariat of Mobility in Bogotá, Colombia, the São Paulo State Military Police of São Paulo, Brazil, and IACP Global Policing staff.
UAE Summer Leadership Tour
A group of university students and officials from the UAE Ministry of Interior visited IACP headquarters as part of a two-month Summer Leadership Tour. While in Alexandria, the group learned about the IACP and local and federal policing in the U.S. from IACP staff and IACP Fellows. Prior to the visit, IACP arranged a tour of U.S. Military Academy West Point for the group.
Cape Town Safety & Security Directorate Technical Assistance
On May 22-27, 2023, IACP led a team of subject matter experts on a technical assistance visit to South Africa to assist the Cape Town Safety & Security Directorate with the implementation of an integrated city-wide body-worn camera, in-car camera, and license plate reader (LPR) program. The technical assistance featured IACP-developed resources, policy considerations, and operational assessments on these systems.
ACCP Annual General Meeting and Conference
From May 22-26, 2023, President John Letteney, Vice President at Large James Hicks, and IACP staff attended the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) 37th Annual General Meeting and Conference in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. The IACP was represented in meetings and discussions at the event, and the IACP staffed an information booth in the exposition hall of the conference.
Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) - UN Road Safety Week
IACP delivered training to officers with the enforcement wing of the Delhi, India Transport Department on May 19, 2023. As a part of UN Road Safety Week activities in Delhi, India, 25-30 officers attended the training which covered the topic of safe roadside checkpoints. The training was designed to demonstrate global best practices for the safe set-up and operation of roadside checkpoints for the enforcement of speed, drink driving, and other related offences. 161 of the 640 officers of the enforcement wing have participated in the training, to date.
Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) Site Visit - Recife, Salvador, Campinas, and São Paulo, Brazil
IACP’s Global Policing team conducted a site visit to Brazil as part of the BIGRS Initiative on May 8-12, 2023. The visit included travel to the Brazilian cities of Recife, Salvador, Campinas, and São Paulo. Priorities for the site visit included observing traffic enforcement operations and meeting with state and municipal traffic authorities in each city. A total of 40 traffic agents in Recife, Salvador, and Campinas received training on planning, evaluating, and conducting drink driving enforcement operations.
Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) Site Visit - Bogotá and Cali, Colombia
IACP staff and consultants traveled to Colombia for site visits in Bogotá and Cali on April 16-22, 2023. IACP held a Procedural Justice training for members of the Colombian National Police (CNP) and traffic agents of the District Secretary of Mobility. The training covered topics such as de-escalation, participatory and fair justice, roadside operations, and officer safety. IACP also assessed roadside operations, including a speed control checkpoint performed by CNP and the District Secretary of Mobility, to witness current operational procedures and officer safety standards. In the city of Cali, IACP met with the executive leadership of the Secretary of Mobility and the Guardas de Tránsito (Traffic Guard) to discuss the status of enforcement operations within the city and the next steps for the initiative. IACP also held a training on procedural justice for local traffic agents in Cali.
Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) - Asia Regional Meeting
IACP staff attended the BIGRS Asia Regional Meeting in Mumbai, India from April 4-5, 2023. The meeting included police and traffic officials from several countries in Asia and provided opportunities for robust discussions on ways to advance road safety by saving lives and preventing injuries.
