Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) is designed to prepare law enforcement to respond effectively to individuals with behavioral health conditions (which include mental health conditions and substance use disorders) and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are experiencing a crisis or at risk of experiencing a crisis. The training is designed for sworn officers—but the participation of dispatchers, 911 call-takers, corrections/detention officers, probation/parole officers, fire and emergency medical services, and members of a mobile crisis team, is encouraged. CRIT is designed to be co-taught by law enforcement trainers and behavioral health or IDD subject matter experts. This document integrates adult learning theory to provide trainers with practical tips for training law enforcement and includes specific examples from the CRIT curriculum.
