Practices in Modern Policing: Community Participation and Leadership

Community Participation and LeadershipIn 2016, the COPS Office, in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and CNA, launched the Advancing 21st Century Policing Initiative. This program provides evaluations and technical support to 15 law enforcement agencies. Because these agencies are diverse in size, location, and other characteristics, their insights and lessons learned can be useful to other agencies across the nation. Their program efforts are published as part of the Practices in Modern Policing series. These reports offer guidance to the field for advancing practices and policies in specific aspects of community policing.

This publication focuses on how law enforcement agencies can build trust and improve performance by embracing community policing programs that give community members a voice and a role in supporting public safety.
