One of the two driving forces of the IACP Center for Officer Safety and Wellness (the Center) is wellness. But what does wellness mean? Wellness is the state of being in good physical and mental health. But what is well-being and how does it differ from wellness?

We decided to learn more about well-being. Through an introduction from our friends at Target, the Center partnered with Gallup, a research based-consulting company to determine what well-being means to the IACP and its membership

The Mirriam-Webster dictionary defines well-being as the state of being happy, healthy or prosperous. Gallup and Healthways, a global well-being company, believe all of these factors are important to a person’s well-being. They developed the Well-Being 5 framework, a comprehensive resource to measure well-being, which acknowledges that different aspects of a person’s life are interconnected. The five factors included in the framework are:
    • Purpose well-being: Enjoying your career every day and being motivated to establish and achieve goals to advance your career.
    • Social well-being: Having several supportive relationships that help you develop and grow. These relationships can be with a spouse, family, friends or co-workers.
    • Financial well-being: Being financially secure and free of stress caused by debt or lack of finances.
    • Community well-being: Enjoying and taking pride in the community you live in and participating in community events.
Physical well-being: Being able to manage your physical, mental and emotional health by making time to exercise, eat well and get enough sleep.

Read more about the Gallup/Healthways Well-being 5 and the Center for Officer Safety and Wellness’s work to improve officer well-being.

It is the IACP’s position that no injury to or death of a law enforcement professional is acceptable. The IACP Center for Officer Safety and Wellness strives to improve awareness on all aspects of officer safety, health, and wellness. Please feel free to contact the Center at [email protected] and let us know what well-being means to you.
