The GALLUP/Healthways Well-Being 5 framework, a resource created to calculate general well-being, is comprised of five factors: purpose, social, financial, community, and physical well-being. These well-being aspects are important and should be interconnected, however, only 7% of individuals reported they have attained all five aspects in their lives. It is imperative to be informed about what each of the five factors encompasses and what can be done to improve them.

The first of the five factors, purpose well-being, refers to having a plan and the means to achieve one’s personal goals, and feeling like you have the motivation to make each day on the job enjoyable. It also focuses on the ability of an individual to advance his or her own career.  Having meaningful purpose in one’s career is a critical aspect to overall well-being. GALLUP’s comprehensive research affirms that if an individual enjoys genuine satisfaction from his or her job, the chances of having a higher standard of well-being in the other four categories is increased.

The IACP offers an array of programs to provide law enforcement with such information. Programs such as Leadership in Police Organizations, the Women’s Leadership Institute, and many others, are available to help law enforcement officers find different ways to develop their careers, while simultaneously giving vital information on how to safely conduct their duties.

If you are interested in learning about a policing career, visit http://discoverpolicing.org/ for more information. For more information on the above mentioned programs, visit http://www.theiacp.org/Training-Classes.

It is the IACP’s position that no injury to or death of a law enforcement professional is acceptable. The IACP Center for Officer Safety and Wellness strives to improve awareness on all aspects of officer safety, health, and wellness. Please feel free to contact the Center at [email protected] and let us know what well-being means to you.
