Statement from the International Association of Chiefs of Police

Yesterday was a sad and tragic day in the United States. Passion gave way to violence, led to injuries and death, and threatened the very institutions at the core of American democracy.

As the world’s largest organization of police leaders, we reiterate our call for all – regardless of position or political party – to work for peace and calm, to defuse this toxic environment, and work together to forge a path forward.

Many are focused on, and raising questions about, the police response to yesterday’s assault on the U.S. Capitol. While the planning and response should be carefully examined, we must not lose sight of the fact that the officers who willingly place themselves in harm’s way to protect others deserve our gratitude and support each and every day.
