Community Based Crime Reduction
Building safe and secure communities aims to reduce violent crime by integrating law enforcement strategies into community-based crime reduction efforts.
Project Page Description
The IACP, working with the University of Cincinnati and University of Las Vegas, Nevada and supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice, provides training and technical assistance (TTA) for the Innovations in Community Based Crime Reduction (CBCR) Program by promoting collaboration between community stakeholders and law enforcement with the goal of identifying and reducing hot spot areas of criminal activity.
Data Driven
CBCR sites work with their research partners to develop and utilize evidence-based strategies to target crime hot spots. Hot spots are often concentrated public spaces in communities with prevalent criminal activity. Sites and research partners work collaboratively to identify and monitor hot spots of criminal activity.
Community-Oriented
CBCR sites work to incorporate community perspectives throughout the duration of the project. Residents help in identifying problems, selecting strategies, and creating safe and healthy environments.
Spurs Revitalization
CBCR utilizes location-based strategies to tackle unsafe streets, properties, and parks; unemployment; transit barriers; and service gaps related to crime.
Builds Partnerships
CBCR engages members from the private and public sector of the community, allowing the project to have multiple resources and perspectives to more effectively build and execute a comprehensive plan to solve crime challenges for lasting change.
