Kurt Holden
Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, Wright State University, Ohio
Chief Kurt Holden has transformed the Wright State University Department of Public Safety into a model of modern, community-focused policing. Rising through the ranks over 16 years from sergeant to chief, he has led with transparency, empathy, and innovation. When Chief Holden assumed leadership, the department faced low morale and limited community engagement. Adopting a “Moneyball”-inspired leadership philosophy to drive improved recruitment and retention, he rebuilt the department’s culture, prioritizing support, collaboration, and officer well-being.
Chief Holden launched a Campus Safety Series at the university, which is a comprehensive community policing training program that is now mandatory for all university employees. Delivered both in-person and virtually, the series covers mental health awareness, active threat response, general safety, and Narcan administration. Chief Holden has also enhanced the department’s training program, secured over $650,000 in grants for campus security upgrades, and is currently leading the department through Ohio’s new law enforcement accreditation process. In addition, he has introduced new projects and collaborations that have created a safe, more inclusive campus environment. His efforts earned the department the Champion of Diversity Award and multiple University Presidential Excellence Awards. Beyond policing, he oversees Parking Services, Emergency Management, the Customer Care Center, and the Dispatch Center—ensuring operational excellence across campus.
Chief Holden’s personal journey is equally inspiring. Raised in foster care from the age of two, he overcame adversity to become a servant-leader dedicated to uplifting others and driven to serve and lead with integrity and professionalism. His commitment to mentorship, diversity, and student success has made him a trusted figure on campus and in the broader law enforcement community.
“My career has provided me with a platform to create meaningful change….Every day I am reminded of why I chose this path.”
