Detective Acting Inspector Joel Williams exemplifies the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and service in Australian law enforcement. With over a decade of experience in the Australian Federal Police (AFP), he has led complex investigations across counterterrorism, homicide, and violent organized crime networks, demonstrating relentless commitment to maximizing impact on the criminal environment.
Det. A/Insp. Williams excels in leading in joint agency and multidisciplinary environments, communicating effectively, and working collaboratively to deliver results that safeguard national security and protect the most vulnerable. He further serves as a police negotiator and has successfully resolved multiple high-risk situations.
His academic achievements are also impressive, holding three master’s degrees in international relations, international trade and commerce law, and national security policy (advanced). He was awarded the AFP Legacy Brice Steele Memorial Scholarship and conducted international research on terrorism, reinforcing his role as a thought leader in law enforcement.
In 2022, Det. A/Insp. Williams began learning to play the bagpipes after being moved by hearing them at a colleague’s funeral. He quickly became highly proficient with the instrument and has since represented the AFP at events including the 2024 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland and the 2025 Pacific Police Tattoo in Papua New Guinea.

He presents to police recruits, detective training, and partner agencies on investigations, counterterrorism, and best practice policing skills.
