Detective Sergeant David Roys of the La Plata Police Department exemplifies the power of purpose-driven policing. With nearly 12 years of law enforcement experience, Roys has built a reputation for his tireless work ethic, investigative acumen, and unwavering commitment to protecting the most vulnerable. 

As a college student majoring in sociology, Det. Sgt. Roys was inspired to start down a path toward policing by a recently retired detective who taught one of his courses. It quickly became clear to him that policing was a way to make a difference in the world.  

Det. Sgt. Roys began his career with a Maryland sheriff’s office, investigating crimes against children. During this time, he completed Gunderson Child First training to become a nationally certified forensic interviewer.  At La Plata Police Department, he now leads the Criminal Investigations Unit while also heading up recruitment and serving as an instructor. His dedication was on full display in 2023, when his meticulous investigation and persistence led to the arrest and conviction of a violent sex offender, preventing further harm to the community and receiving a commendation from the chief. 

Beyond investigations, Det. Sgt. Roys is a mentor, educator, and community advocate. He has developed and taught courses on juvenile interactions, identity theft, and sex offenses. He strives to be an example and resource for newer officers and models dedication to his work and the community. His leadership extends to community outreach, where he actively participates in events like the community block party, Shop with a Cop, Special Olympics fundraisers, and town hall forums.
