Women's Leadership institute (WLI)

About WLI

Women in law enforcement will face a number of  challenges as they become leaders in law enforcement.  In response to feedback surrounding the need for a training program tailored to women in law enforcement, the Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI) is a new, entrepreneurial effort to create an academically rigorous training program which recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities women face as they rise through leadership positions in public safety organizations nationally and internationally

The IACP serves the leaders of today, and develops the leaders of tomorrow; the WLI is no different in its goals and focus. The science-based and dynamic curriculum integrates the art and science of leadership with professional and personal development strategies of importance to women in public safety.  The WLI leveraged and expanded on IACP’s highly-respected Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO) course by working with a Curriculum Design Team (CDT) to modify and update research around theories on leading individuals, leading groups, and facilitating change, while building new content and material focused on addressing ethical leadership, effective communication and counseling, understanding stakeholders, leadership and wellness, personal financial management, and thoughtful strategic career planning.  Attendees are provided numerous opportunities for self-evaluation which allows them to use the Institute as a forum to explore opportunities for change through themselves, other attendees, instructors, and mentors.

The program is highly interactive and features senior women instructors and mentors from United States and Canadian law enforcement agencies in an intensive experiential learning environment.   The course is open to female and male, sworn and non-sworn personnel serving in supervisory positions, and to senior patrol officers aspiring to become supervisors.

Classes begin on Sunday evening and conclude early Friday afternoon.  Total tuition for this class, in most locations, is $1,200.  Tuition pricing is a combination of $975 for basic tuition fees and an additional $225 for mandatory select food and beverage elements that are incorporated into the Institute (Sunday evening reception; daily breakfast; Thursday night panel dinner; beverages and snack breaks throughout the week).  Some high-cost regions may experience an increase in tuition rates.  A WLI room block for accommodations will be negotiated and arranged by the IACP in conjunction with the training venue.  Lodging rates may vary by city.
