Women in law enforcement will face a number of challenges as they become leaders in law enforcement. The Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI) is an entrepreneurial effort to create an academically rigorous training program which recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities women face as they rise through leadership positions in public safety organizations nationally and internationally.
The science-based and dynamic curriculum integrates the art and science of leadership with professional and personal development strategies of importance to women in public safety. The WLI leverages IACP’s highly-respected Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO) program while integrating new content with a focus on enhancing the business, leadership and personal effectiveness skills of female leaders. Curriculum focus includes:
- Individual Differences
- Motivating Success
- Leading Teams, Organizations and Change
- Crucial Conversations and Counseling
- Strategic Career Planning
- Fair, Impartial and Ethical Policing
- Understanding Stakeholders
- Personal Financial Management
- Networking and Mentorship
Attendees are provided numerous opportunities for self-evaluation which allows them to use the Institute as a forum to explore opportunities for change through themselves, other attendees, instructors, and mentors. The program is highly interactive and features senior women instructors and mentors from United States and Canadian law enforcement agencies in an intensive experiential learning environment. The course is open to female and male, sworn and non-sworn personnel serving in supervisory positions, and to senior patrol officers aspiring to become supervisors.
Graduates of the WLI will receive a free one year membership to the IACP valued at $75-$150.

Do I have to be a member to attend?
No, this session is open to all law enforcement (federal, local, state, and military) and public safety personnel. We do, however, encourage you to explore the benefits of IACP membership.
Who are the instructors?
We have an experienced and diverse cadre of instructors, both female and male, who are trained and certified IACP instructors for the WLI as well as our LPOSM program. Our instructors are senior level law enforcement professionals, both retired and active, from within the U.S. and Canada.
Can I receive POST certification?
We seek POST certification for each of the WLI’s within the U.S. in each state where the institute takes place. POST certification can vary widely from state to state; please speak with the Project Coordinator for your specific institute session.
