Enhancing Conviction Integrity through Forensics Webinar - Achieving Justice: Ethical Considerations in Sexual Assault and Homicide Cases

SAKI TTA will host a webinar titled, Achieving Justice: Ethical Considerations in Sexual Assault and Homicide Cases on Tuesday, June 21st, from 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM ET. This webinar will be presented by Patricia Powers and John Wilkinson, Attorney Advisors with AEquitas.

Achieving Justice in sexual violence and homicide cases-both current and cold- requires prosecutors and associated professionals to have a firm grasp not only of their legal obligations and applicable law but also of their ethical responsibilities throughout each stage of the criminal justice process. These cases may present significant ethical challenges related to victim privacy and confidentiality, discovery, and disclosure of evidence.

This presentation will address the ethical considerations at each stage in a sexual assault or homicide case, spanning from initial investigation to charging, through trial, to sentencing. The presenters will discuss common ethical issues that arise with Brady and Giglio's responsibilities, handling missing or unavailable witnesses, interacting with the media, and navigating evidentiary issues. Hypothetical case scenarios will be used to challenge prosecutors and associated professionals to evaluate their decision-making in the context of ethical rules and considerations.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be better able to:
  • Identify the ethical responsibilities of prosecutors and associated professionals throughout the criminal justice process.
  • Fulfill ethical duties to disclose evidence pursuant to Brady, Giglio, and discovery rules.
  • Approach issues pertaining to charging, investigations, interaction with the media, and victim and surviving family considerations within an ethical framework.
