Chief Deputy United States Marshal, U.S. Marshals Service

CHIEF DEPUTY U.S. MARSHAL CHRISTOPHER BARTHER began his U.S. Marshals career in 2010, previously working as a pre-school teacher and for the U.S. Capital Police. Longing for a sense of service to the community, Chief Deputy Marshal Barther has worked his way up to being the youngest chief deputy U.S. marshal in modern history for the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in the Northern Judicial District of Iowa. As a first-generation federal law enforcement officer, he strives to be a better leader for the community and those under his command, seeking to be a positive inspiration to minorities, underprivileged youth, and underrepresented communities who may view law enforcement in a negative light.

In 2018, he developed the Performance, Resource, and Oversight Tool Using Enhanced Collection Technology (PROTECT) module within the USMS larger mission management system, Capture. The module was designed to quantify exactly how secure federal courthouses or other protected facilities are by computing a numeric facility security profile score. To accomplish this, he created an algorithm that has now been adopted enterprise wide. The new functionality allows the agency to take a standardized approach to assess more than 45,000 facility security requests. The standard algorithm he designed saved the USMS staff over 33,000 hours per year by automatically generating a facility profile score. Additionally, considered to be one of his major achievements, from October 2020 through January 2021, Chief Deputy Barther successfully led Operation Homecoming, which resulted in the reunification of 20 missing children with their loved ones.

“Leadership (in my eyes) is about adapting and being better than you were yesterday for your people tomorrow.”
