Police Chiefs Desk Reference: A Guide for Newly Appointed Police Leaders

This reference is a major component of the New Police Chief Mentoring Project and was designed with the new chief in mind. The Police Chiefs Desk Reference (PCDR) contains a wealth of resources to assist chiefs in their role as a police executive. Police chiefs from around the country who share a desire to pass along their knowledge and experience with their peers contributed many of the writings. It is a compilation of over eight years of effort on behalf on the Smaller Agency Program funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The document contains information about:

  • Leadership
  • Ethics
  • Strategy Guide for an Effective Police Department
  • Policies & Procedures
  • Accreditation
  • Funding
  • Sample Internal and Community Safety Surveys
  • Best Practices Guides written specifically for smaller agencies on a wide range of topics
  • State Associations of Chiefs of Police
  • Many other resource listings, summaries, and web site referrals

There is no charge for the Police Chiefs Desk Reference. All requests are submitted through this website.

PCDR State Chapters

The New Police Chief Mentoring Project is collaborating with state chief's associations from around the country to locate, support and anchor new chiefs to the resources of their association and the mentoring project. We are working together to create additional State Chapters to be added to the PCDR. These chapters will be available on this website and the state association's website and can be downloaded and added to the binder. Resources included are:

  • State Specific Key Contacts
  • Legal and Procedural Issues
  • Training Requirements and Opportunities
  • State Funding Sources, Procedures and Contacts
  • Association Information

Keep watching this site for the availability of your state's chapter.
