Each issue of Police Chief focuses on a different topic of special interest to police executives, determined by reader response to independent surveys and direct feedback from IACP committees. Recent themes have included:

    • ensuring high ethical standards
    • applying innovative technologies
    • managing citizen complaints
    • combating violent crime
    • managing organizational change
    • providing education and training
In addition, the Police Chief also features a variety of informative columns: "President's Message" provides special insights on law enforcement issues from IACP's top elected officer. "From the Director" is a periodic column that offers the chief executives of such federal law enforcement agencies as the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Marshals Service the opportunity to express their unique perspectives on policing. "Chief's Counsel," prepared monthly by members of IACP's Legal Officers Section, tackles legal issues of concern to police executives, with particular emphasis on avoiding departmental liability. "Legislative Alert," designed to keep readers informed of congressional developments affecting the law enforcement community, is written each month by IACP's staff legislative counsel. "Advances and Applications" offers readers the opportunity to learn about and benefit from some of the cutting-edge technologies being implemented around the world. "Technology Talk," written by members of IACP's Law Enforcement Information Management Section, provides first-hand experiences with current technology.

These features, combined with such other regular features as "Survivors' Club," "Product Update" and "IACP News," keep the readership up-to-the-minute and aware of all that may be affecting their present – and future – careers. For IACP members, the cost of the magazine is included in their membership dues; nonmember subscriptions are $25 for 12 months and $42 for 24 months.
