The IACP, through a grant from the COPS Office, is continuing a project to design and test a comprehensive Leadership Development Model for law enforcement agencies nationwide. The IACP is currently seeking one police department to test pilot this Leadership Development Model. The model will reflect already documented best practices in the public and private sectors, the military, and the justice system. It is rooted in community-oriented policing theory and addresses leadership as an agency-wide concept reaching all ranks and positions. The model is designed to be adaptable to individual agency mission and philosophy. Integrity, ethics and public trust are and must be top concerns of all police agencies, and is an integral part of the leadership model.
Leadership in Police Organizations Train-the-Trainer (T3) Workshop Application
4-15 August 2003 in Austin, Texas
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is offering a Train-the-Trainers (T3) Workshop to support its Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO) training program. This workshop is intended to train already talented instructors in productive instructional techniques for the LPO curriculum. Hence attendance requires previous exposure to the LPO material or the desire/ability to self-teach the LPO material before the workshop begins as well as previous instructor experience..
This workshop is not a leadership training course or program. Rather it is training on how to present an already established course of instruction.
There is no application fee or tuition for this workshop. Additionally, travel and per diem are provided for participants. However, there are significant preparations, which are not funded, that are required prior to attendance. A more detailed explanation of these expectations is contained in Part I of the application.
The ideal applicant will have previous training experience, exposure to the LPO curriculum (or the time/desire to self-teach the material prior to the workshop), basic computer skills to include a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and a strong endorsement from his/her department or employer.
We are looking for people who are members of police organizations at any level; people who are affiliated with the COPS regional community policing academies, other police training academies or programs with a leadership emphasis; and independent consultants whose work is primarily with police organizations, in that order.
The application process involves three parts. Applicants will be considered on the strength of their qualifications in each area.
Part I consists of a detailed explanation of the pre-workshop, during, and post workshop activities. This allows applicants and their departments/employers sufficient information to make an informed decision about attending the workshop as well as post-workshop obligations incurred by attendance.
Part II provides applicant information to facilitate selection committee activities.
Part III is an endorsement from an applicant’s department/employer acknowledging that the applicant’s qualifications, and availability to meet the pre-workshop, during, and post workshop requirements.
