Profile of Identity Crime
Based upon a 2004 National Criminal Victimization Survey (NCVS) conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics in the U.S. Department of Justice:
- 30 percent of identity crime results from lost or stolen wallets, checkbooks, and credit cards.
- 3 percent of households in the U.S. had a member who was a victim of identify theft and possible crime.
- Households headed by 18-24 year olds in the $75,000 or upper income bracket are more likely to experience identity theft and possible crime.
- Rural households are less likely to be a victim.
