Of the identity crime/theft complaints reported to the FTC Clearinghouse:
- 70 percent of victims knew some information about the person suspected of committing the offense – including name, address, or phone number used by the suspect.
- 28 percent of victims thought they knew how the thief obtained their personal information. Of these 15 percent indicated they knew who committed the crime.
- 13 percent of victims reported an event they believed led to the identity theft.
