LESS: Law Enforcement Stops and Safety

Mission

Create a safer working environment for law enforcement in highway safety and/or traffic related activities


Operating Goals

  • Explore and examine the factors which lead—or contribute—to the rising incidence of law enforcement fatalities and injuries related to vehicle crashes
  • Develop and/or identify appropriate strategies dealing with law enforcement vehicles:
    • vehicle requirements and design
    • lighting and markings
    • aftermarket and optional equipment
    • advanced technologies
  • Identify procedures and best practices for :
    • traffic stops
    • scene management
    • traffic direction
  • Improve public awareness of traffic scene safety
  • Explore highway and engineering improvements
