IACP August Vollmer Excellence in Forensic Science Award
IACP recognizes the significant impact forensic science has on the criminal justice system. The August Vollmer Excellence in Forensic Science Award has been created to honor the proactive, innovative use of forensic technologies by law enforcement.
Nominations for selection of the 2008 awards are now being accepted in the following categories:
- Current or Past Contribution to Forensic Science by Police Agency
- Current or Past Contribution to Forensic Science by an Individual
- Current or Past Collaboration in Forensic Science
- Innovation in Forensic Technology
- Significant Investigative Value in a Major Crime
- Enhancement of Forensic Capability by a Forensic Science Provider
Nomination criteria below.
Award Regulations:
- SUBMISSION DEADLINE March 21st, 2008
- Submissions must be limited to no more than 1000 words.
- Forward all submissions through email as an attachment if at all possible, otherwise mail to the attention of Aviva Kurash, 515 N. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314
- Each agency, organization or individual may only be nominated for one category.
- The award selection committee reserves the right to reassign nomination categories.
- Additional materials will not be accepted as part of the nomination packet (e.g. videos, posters, pins, pictures etc.)
- The nominations will be judged by members of the IACP Forensic Committee. Winners will be notified in June and be presented with their award (a sterling silver medallion) at the Annual IACP Conference to be held in San Diego, CA in November 2008

Nomination Criteria:

Current or Past Contribution by Police Agency
- What was the contribution by the agency to forensic science?
- Describe the circumstances under which the contribution was developed.
- How was the contribution deployed in the field and/or in the forensic/law enforcement community?
- How did it benefit the law enforcement profession?
- Does the agency have a history of proactive contributions to the forensic/law enforcement community?
Current or Past Contribution by an Individual
- What was the contribution by the individual to forensic science?
- Describe the circumstances under which the contribution was developed.
- How was the contribution deployed in the field and/or in the forensic/law enforcement community?
- How did it benefit the law enforcement profession?
- Does the individual have a history of proactive contributions to the forensic/law enforcement community?
Current or Past Collaboration in Forensic Science
- Identify all agencies and forensic science entities involved
- Describe the reason for this collaboration
- Describe the overall benefit of this collaborative effort
- Explain how this effort could serve as a model for others
Innovation in Forensic Technology (Individual or crime lab)
- Describe the innovation
- Explain how the innovation added to the value of forensic science.
- Provide an example (s) of its use
- Describe the end result of its use
- Explain implications of its use in the future.
Significant Investigative Value in a Major Crime
- Describe the incident in which current forensic science technology played a significant role in solving a major crime.
- Was the technique or process creatively used to solve a major crime?
- How can the technique or process be used for other cases with other agencies?
Enhancement of Forensic Capability by a Forensic Science Provider
- Describe the systematic challenge the impeded optimal performance and required improvement
- Explain what actions were taken to correct or enhance the situation or service given
- Describe, qualitatively or quantitatively, the impact of the improvement
