Federal “High-Visibility Safety Apparel” Rule Open for Comment until July 31, 2008

The requirement that law enforcement personnel begin wearing high-visibility safety apparel when they are directing traffic; investigating crashes; or handling lane closures, obstructed roadways, and disasters within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway becomes effective November 24, 2008. However, that rule is included in the proposed new edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), includes the new “Public Safety Vest” (ANSI 207-2006), and expands coverage to all highways. The proposed rule can be viewed at (http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20081800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/pdf/E7-24863.pdf) and is open for comment until July 31, 2008. The pertinent references to the “Public Safety Vest” are Paragraphs 375 and 376 on Page 318.
