Statement of IACP President Terrence M. Cunningham on Officer Involved Shootings in LA and MN

The International Association of Chiefs of Police is closely monitoring the officer involved shootings that occurred in Louisiana and Minnesota this week. Any loss of life is a horrible tragedy and we offer our condolences to the Sterling and Castile families.

As a law enforcement leadership organization, we understand the life-altering gravity of these situations for all involved - the victims, the officers, the agencies and the communities. We encourage everyone, including our elected officials, to reserve judgement while expedited yet thorough investigations proceed. Public statements that presuppose guilt, inflame public opinion or prejudice investigations serve no useful purpose.

While the released videos depict various viewpoints, we must all allow the investigating agencies to do their work to reveal the facts and circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
