Statement of IACP President Richard Beary on Umpqua Community College Shooting
As President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), I am deeply troubled by the shooting that took place at Oregon's Umpqua Community College yesterday. On behalf of the IACP membership, we deeply mourn the lives that have been lost and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and the community that has been devastated by this tragic and senseless crime. However, as President Obama noted yesterday, thoughts and prayers will not keep this horror from occurring again.
We, as a nation, must take immediate action to prevent these tragedies. Too many lives have been lost, too many futures destroyed and too many families have been devastated by gun violence. The IACP actively supports furthering a dialogue with all vested stakeholders to prevent the heartbreak of what happened yesterday from ever happening again.
