Message from President Carroll: IACP School Supplies Initiative to Benefit Orlando Youth
IACP SCHOOL SUPPLIES INITIATIVE TO BENEFIT ORLANDO YOUTH
Dear IACP Membership:
At the 117th Annual IACP Conference and Exposition, the IACP continues to reach out to the community and make an impact on the lives of young people. With the Civil Rights Committee at the helm, the IACP will be embarking on another outreach venture. I am asking all IACP conference attendees to participate in donating school supplies in conjunction with the Orlando Police Department in support of the youth residing at the Windsor Cove Apartment complex.
In July 2008, the Windsor Cove Apartments (formerly the Palms Apartments) was identified as an area of increased crime that negatively impacted the community. Chief Val B. Demings and her staff met with the residents and sought their input on how to improve their lives and community. In conjunction with the residents, Orange County Public Schools, Work Force of Central Florida, and the faith-based community, the Orlando Police Department was able to realize a 21.11% reduction in crime for the year 2008 vs. 2009, and overall crime is currently down 31.25% for January 1, 2010 thru April 23, 2010 compared with January 1, 2009 thru April 23, 2009. This was a significant accomplishment. The residents and their community partnerships have significantly and successfully changed their rental community. As a result, the name, Palms Apartments, was changed to the Windsor Cove Apartments to signify the rebirth of a community and its residents.
Join me in supporting this project by bringing one or more of the below listed items to the conference. There will be drop-off bins marked Orlando-Windsor Cove throughout the conference center. Let’s make this another successful IACP community service project to benefit youth in Orlando!
