Larry Mathieson

Larry W. Mathieson (Chief of Police, Retired) is a 35 year veteran of law enforcement having served for 9 years as the Chief of Police of the City of Ormond Beach, Florida. During his tenure with that agency, he and his staff were successful in fully implementing community policing in the Department, achieving accreditation and reaccreditation for the agency and constructing a new police facility. In addition, the agency is credited with implementing a number of creative programs which have been emulated by other Departments throughout the state.

Prior to assuming Command of this agency, Chief Mathieson completed a decorated 25 year career with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Dade County, Florida, retiring at the rank of Major. He is credited with being a key figure in the development of the Mobile Field Force concept and was the Project Director for the Dade County Juvenile Assessment Center at the time of his retirement.

He has been a law enforcement instructor for over 25 years, focusing his efforts in the areas of assessment centers, organizational excellence, supervisory skill development, leadership and organizational ethics. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Daytona Beach Community College where he instructs on a variety of topics.

Chief Mathieson has a Master’s Degree from the University of Miami in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree from Florida Atlantic University in Social Science. He is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS).

Chief Mathieson has held leadership positions in law enforcement professional associations throughout the state. Prior to his retirement, he held the position of First Vice President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, President of the Volusia-Flagler Police Chiefs Association, Chairman of the Region VII Training Council for the state of Florida and Chairperson of the Community Council of the PACE Center for girls.

Currently he is the President and CEO of Mathieson Consulting LLC. He and his company provide law enforcement consulting services to the IACP and Florida Police Chiefs Association as instructors and facilitators. He also consults for a number of private sector companies.
