Jim McClaren
In his 30 year career, Jim McClaren has devoted his architectural career to the planning and design of law enforcement facilities and forensic science laboratories in nearly every state and province in the United States and Canada.
His projects on more than 200 facilities range from some of the largest law enforcement headquarters in the nation to many small town and village facilities. His work has been consistently recognized at the state and national level with awards for design and sustainability. His police station projects have been featured in the American Institute of Architects’ Academy for Justice Review nearly every year since the program’s inception.
He also frequently works as a public speaker and chaired the Planning, Design, and Moving committee of the American Society of Crime Lab Directors Handbook: Forensic Science Laboratories. He has authored and contributed articles for The Chief, planning guidelines for the US Marshals Service, and the National Institute of Justice. Mr. McClaren co-wrote Chapter 16 of the current edition of the ICMA textbook: Local Government Police Management.
Mr. McClaren has presented the Planning, Designing, and Construction of Police Facilities course through the IACP since 1988. He serves as the only licensed architect in the instructor cadre of the IACP Center for Police Leadership and Training.
