IACP Center for Officer Safety and Wellness

Fostering a law enforcement community that is well equipped, trained and physically prepared to confront violence.

Officer Safety has always been a issue of paramount importance for the IACP and the IACP Foundation; and the Foundation is proud to support the efforts of the Center for Officer Safety and Wellness (COSW)

The COSW will conduct necessary research to ensure that the law enforcement community has the equipment, training and information they need to make certain that they are as prepared as possible to confront and survive the violence they face in the performance of their duty.

Law enforcement leaders should not accept the notion that injuries, accidents, and disabling events are an inevitable reality of the law enforcement profession.

The IACP and the IACP Foundation have one goal: zero officers killed or injured.

Priorities of the COSW include:

  • Felonious Assaults

  • Reducing Officer Injuries

  • Traffic Safety

  • Preventing Officer Suicide

Efforts will also emphasize the two critical safety areas below:

  • Mandatory Vest Use by Police Officers resolution – a 2011 call on all law enforcement executives to immediately develop and implement and mandatory body armor wear policies for their departments

  • Mandatory Seat Belt Use by Police Officers resolution – a 2011 call on all law enforcement executives to immediately develop and implement mandatory seat belt for their departments
