About Erik Weihenmayer

An accomplished climber, Erik Weihenmayer became the only blind man in history to reach the summit of the world's highest peak - Mount Everest on May 25, 2001. On August 20, 2008, when he stood on top of Carstensz Pyramid, the tallest peak in Austral-Asia, Weihenmayer completed his quest to climb the Seven Summits - the highest peak on every continent. 

Motivational Speaker

Erik is an accomplished motivational speaker and his speaking career has taken him around the world, from Hong Kong to Geneva, from the 2005 APEC Summit in Chile to the 2008 Presidential Inaugural Celebration in Washington DC. Erik speaks to audiences on harnessing the power of adversity, the importance of a strong “rope team,” and the daily struggle to pursue your dreams. Clearly, Erik's accomplishments show that one does not have to have perfect eyesight to have extraordinary vision.

2009 IACP Foundation Person of the Year

Mr. Heinrichs is the co-founder and president of Intrado, Inc., a global provider of emergency communications infrastructure and services.  A recognized emergency services expert, Mr. Heinrichs has played a key role in the evolution of the nation’s 911 network and continues to influence 911 public policy.

In response to a personal belief that community safety is a priority that deserves great leadership, Mr. Heinrichs led a two-year effort to create and fund the Public Safety Leadership Institute in Colorado.  This institute, serving Colorado police chiefs, fire chiefs and sheriffs, is a dynamic and rigorous year-long experience bringing best practices of leadership, communication and collaboration to the public safety community. 

The program is partnered with the Institute for leadership and Organizational Performance at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business and is highly selective in its recruitment for qualified candidates.

In addition to the leadership institute, Mr. Heinrichs and the staff at Intrado, Inc. regularly contribute to community safety initiatives through programs developed internally by Intrado employees.  Staff members are invited to submit ideas for projects and, if selected, are given the time and financial support to implement the projects in the community.

For his continual support and leadership, as well as his contributions to public safety and communications, the IACP Foundation is proud to honor George Heinrichs as its 2009 Person of the Year.
