The National Law Enforcement Challenge provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to make a significant difference in the communities they serve. The Challenge is a friendly competition between similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies that recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in the United States.

The program is designed to strengthen and support traffic enforcement nationwide and targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection impaired driving, and speeding. Participating agencies are asked to provide documentation on their agency’s efforts and effectiveness in areas of officer training, public information, and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries.

2009 and 2010 Applications

This year agencies should expect to see two applications, 2009 and 2010. This is a change from past years where agencies would receive their application at the end of the year. After reviewing the application process IACP has decided to start providing agencies with the Challenge application in advance of the year that agencies will be conducting their traffic safety programs and collecting data to include in the application.

This change will provide agencies with more time to plan and prepare their submissions. The IACP is committed to making the application process as easy as possible for agencies to allow for greater participation. While we understand that this is confusing agencies should note that this year is the only year that you will receive two applications. Applications will still be due to IACP for judging on their normal schedule so the 2009 application is due on May, 3, 2010 and the 2010 application is due May, 4, 2011.

Application

This year two applications are available to agencies, 2009 and 2010. To help eliminate confusion the applications are two different colors, 2009 (orange/blue) 2010 (green/blue), to distinguish them from one another. Please remember to submit the correct application for the appropriate year.

Entries submitted without a completed application will be considered incomplete and will not be judged. Make sure you fill out the entire application and include it with your entry.

Traffic Safety Innovations

This year the IACP and NHTSA developed Traffic Safety Innovations, a booklet that provides insights from some of the National Law Enforcement Challenge winners about what ideas they are employing that have had a positive impact on their community. Traffic Safety Innovations provides a snapshot of what these agencies are doing to get people to buckle up and slow down. Download a copy or contact Sarah Horn at horn@theiacp.org to order a free copy of the booklet.

Nifty Fifty

This publication provides interesting and innovative ideas on how agencies promoted traffic safety in their community. Please feel free to incorporate these ideas into your traffic safety program.
